Greve in Chianti, site for Contemporary art

on till 25th April 2000

report by Rachel Le Goff in Tuscany
Here’s a novel idea! If you have the leisure over the Winter months ahead why not follow a curious route around Chiantishire to view installations by contemporary artists. This rambling exhibition called Tuscia Electa :Towards the Immaterial features seventeen international artists in seventeen historical and natural locations of the Chianti area.

This excerpt from their promotional brochure should give you an indication of what to expect:

Barberino Val d’Elsa, Pieve di Sant’Appiano

Hidetoshi Nagasawa has located his installation “Pozzo nel Cielo” (Well in the Sky) between four antique columns of the Baptistry opposite the Romanesque church – thus joining the energy of  the site where the earth meets the heavens and the heavens descend to meet the earth. “

Perhaps the most internationally known artist to participate is Bill Viola who has been graciously permitted by the monks of Florence’s Certosa del Galluzzo to install his videoart alongside the famous frescoes of Pontormo. Apparently it was the renaissance master’s panel painting “Visitazione” which inspired Viola’s work “The Greeting”.
Pontormo, VISITAZIONE

Other participating artists are : Antoni Abad (Catalan), Nicola Carrino, Eliseo Mattiacci, Tung-Lu Hung (Taiwan), Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japan), Bruno Benuzzi,, Monica Cuoghi & Claudio Corsello, Mario Merz, Max Neuhaus, Virgilio Sieni, Grazia Toderi, Christian Boltanski (Paris), Emanual Dimas de Melo Pimenta (Brazil), Michelangelo Pistoletto, Arnaldo Pomodoro.

Several are presenters of performance art and will combine music and multimedia in their work such as Virgilio Sieni and Grazia Toderi who will perform at San Casciano Val di Pesa, Teatro Niccolini on 27th November 1999 at 9pm.

Tuscia Electa is curated by Fabio Cavallucci and there is a catalogue published which is for sale at the various venues. (see the map below for where to go!)
Also showing in the area is a major exhibition of work by GERHARD RICHTER at the Museo Pecci, Prato (on till 9th January 2000)
