LUNETTE 3 - Atteone
trasformato in cervo "Actaeon transformed into a Stag"
after Francesco Salviati,
c. 1560
Ovid, Metamorphoses 3:
274-252
Ovid describes in length
how the young Prince Actaeon accidentally sees the goddess Diana when out
hunting. It is one of the most common mythological subjects chosen by renaissance
artists. Diana is in a grotto bathing with her nymphs. She transforms Actaeon
into a stag as punishment for having glimpsed her divine nakedness. He
stands with his dogs at his heels, and hands raised in astonishment as
the goddess tries to cover her nudity.
